Hi Fellas, a followup on Phil's comments.....

We can get space at rootsweb. In fact we will have space on
rootsweb -- for a FAQ and stuff. We can expand it to include
other ideas -- like space to post people's queries.

HOWEVER, nothing is free. Rootsweb does not require donations,
but they are short on disk space and need to buy more. I would
like to ask them to host our website but ONLY inf we are
willing to donate to help them out.

There are many levels on which to donate or join, and you can
do so on line. Go to this webpage for details:
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html

Another idea -- someone asked about splitting the list
into two: one for just genealogy and one for wider discussion.
I've often thought about this too. However, I'm busy as can be.
I'm not as stressed as Brian Leverich at Rootsweb but I'm stressed
out enough. Would anyone volunteer to host the genealogy only
list? We can promise you lots of support and assistence . We can
all share the web page (and Phil). We just spread out the work,
so more things get done.

Hosting the genealogy only list is not an ego trip. There is little
power to be weilded <grin>. It means receiving bounces (failures)
and determining if they need processed or ignored. (Most of the time,
ignore). Also people who try to sub/unsub and can't get routed to
you for assistence. Within a short time you can eyeball the problem
with great skill. I am more than willing to help out. There is a
listowners list (which squabbles far worse than us). One of us could
be one it in case something important is posted. If someone goes
on vacation -- the other could help .

If you "join" Rootsweb for $24 you get two lists. The "other" one
could be the East Lothian (Scotland) list. I got a lot of ancestors
from there and would LOVE a list, but I'm too busy to handle it.
I neglect the Border's list-- my other -- for this one. I've
learned a lot about how the internet works from other list
owners, btw -- very interesting!

So think about it. No massive rush. Rootsweb is too busy to set
up another list right now. Realistically, if it does not get
financial support, it could cease to exist.

Regards,

Linda Merle
