The original quotation was
" Twain claims that Scott filled the South's mind and heart with
bogus notions of aristocracy, rank, honour and made it fall in love
with worthless dreams and degraded systems of government."
I have read the post again and I find no other word which might be
taken as meaning decaying.
I was merely quoting Mark Twain," Life on the Mississippi",
Chapter 40. Twain, or Samuel Clemens 1835 - 1910, was, I believe
an American Citizen from the South.
