I'm sorry, I know that this is politics and so not exactly the topic
of this list, but I had to comment on the following that John said as
it is factually incorrect and a common myth:

Northern Ireland was set up against the opposition of the British
government. Partition was caused by grassroots opposition to Home
Rule/seccession in Northern Ireland- the events of the 'Ulster
Crisis' right before WWI should make this abundantly clear- virtually
the entire protestant community of Ulster organised to resisty
attempts by the British governement to force them 'out' of the Union
and into a Home Rule Irish polity. Therefoe to claim that NI was an
attempt to hold onto part of Ireland or 'control' the population
by 'the English' is contrary to easily verfied historical fact (its
also extremely patronising).
