My Irish-American husband always said that Tinkers were Gypsies or like =
Gypsies - travelling around Ireland in horse-drawn wagons inflicting =
their con games and petty thievery on the local population. It was my =
understanding that the saying "Not worth a tinker's dam" referred to a =
lame horse, not a curse. I realize that this is defamatory to both =
tinkers and Gypsies but only conveys my understanding of the perceptions =
thereof.
