My GG Grandfather Edward Hamilton was born in Ireland in 1820-30, but I am
wondering if it is possible that his father (presently unknown GGG Grandad)
may have been a military man, who was sent back "home", to retire, or at the
end of his term of service, and then returned to Canada, or went back to
Ireland after he got out of the military in Canada, and that after my GG
Grandad was born in Ireland, the family returned to Canada as a civilians.
I have been looking at a book of retirees abroad, of the British military.
I see lots of Hamiltons who retired to Kingston, and Toronto, which is where
I first pick up traces of my GG Grandfather, Having his own first three
children, FJ, Edward (my G Grandfather) and Maria. born in Toronto in the
early 1850s. The family moved to Kingston in the mid 1850s, and FJ or
Frances John or John Francis was in the military in Kingston, in the 1870s,
and still in the military at the end of the 1890s. He was my G Grandad's
elder brother.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks a lot. Gail
I am only theorizing here, my GG father's first child, John Francis or
Visa Versa, FJ, was a career military man, and no one in the family that I
know of except his son Samuel Arthur Hamilton who was killed in WW I, was
in the military.
