Hello John,
What a riot!
My story doesn't quite match, but your message reminded me of it.
My ancestor (Robert McDonald) came over "before the Revolutionary War" and settled in South Carolina, and supposedly fought on the Patriot side at the battle of Guilford Courthouse. The "family rumor" is that Robert's father and brothers (didn't say how many--maybe 2?) were also involved in the battle, and that the father and one brother died in the fighting. (This all has yet to be proven.)
The business about family members splitting up is also familiar. Among the Abbeville McDonalds, around 1800, some went west to Georgia, some went north to Illinois, and some remained in Abbeville.
So, does this mean that our "family rumor" is just a Scotch-Irish cultural characteristic? :-)
Lynne
