I went onto the internet and typed in ERIE CANAL. This gave
me several http sites including the below URLS. The 1st will
give you a run down of a reconstructed village such as your
ancestors might have seen while making their passage. It
includes a number of topics to ask for. I didn't see any for
canal construction but I am sure that once you get deeper
into the search on Yahoo or WWW more topics will appear.
