You also assist me in understanding why my grandmother, who is was an
Irish Protestant (Presbyterian too) was very different from my granddad,
culturally...

I've also wondered a bit about the term "Ulster British" which is used in
Northern Ireland today. If I recall correctly, some of the plantations
were
settled by English people. Londonderry (Coleraine) I beleive was one. The
branch of the family from there might indeed be English in origin -- not
sure
yet, though.

So is "Ulster British" a term usually used to describe themselves by folk
who perceive themselves as the same or differnt from Ulster Scots? Is
the superset name "Ulster British" and is it more or less the same as
"Unionist",
which I've heard used with a cultural rather than political connotation?

It almost sounds as if the terms Ulster Scots and Scotch Irish are not
synonyms: ie that on leaving Ireland, one got labeled Scotch Irish if you
were Protestant, but only a subset of those would have ever actually
called
themselves "Ulster Scots"?

I find this discussion very interesting. I hope no one takes offense or
feels that
any of us are grinding any political axes. Rather just attempting to
understand.

In NI have other groups of people, the Hugonots or the highlanders, or the
English,
for instance, identified themselves as an ethnic group?

(I've always, myself, hoped to find I was descended from the sidhe. They
are far
more romantic than even the highlanders.)
