Bill,
You've sucked my brain dry on the subject - can't find anything in
my surnames lists or Gaelic dictionary that sheds any light. I've
seen good info on Gaelic spellings of Scottish names in Black's
"Surnames of Scotland" and elsewhere, but McMahon/McMechen/McMachen
seems to be more Irish (unless Macmunn or Macminn are variations -
could be, they sound similar). I have heard of a book called
"Surnames of Ulster" by Robert Bell, but have not found it. Anyone
out there have a copy, and does it shed any light on this question?
