Hello,

I am new to this mailing list and would like to give my surnames, which
I am told are Scottish. Can anyone confirm this, please?

My grandfather wrote in his application for the Guion Miller Rolls, in
1905:

David Canute/Cornett(an Indian),b. abt 1760s, m. a Basham (Comanche),
probably in VA
They had a daughter, Mollie Canute/Cornett, b. abt 1780s
Mollie Canute married Joseph CHAFFIN (a Scotsman), b.1745 in VA

Joseph CHAFFIN's will was probated in Mocksville,Davie Co, NC, in 1845.
Among his heirs were: daughers, Sarah, Nancy Pack and Rutha Howard. Son:
Thomas. Others: the heirs of Joshua CHAFFIN and Thomas CHAFFIN (son of
Alexander H. CHAFFIN)

Joseph also had a son, Joe Jr. who died in 1831 and a son, Nathan.
Joesph had a brother, Nathan CHAFFIN, d.1824, who lived in the part of
Rowan Co, that became Davie County. Joseph is believed to be the son of
John CHAFFIN, d.1773 Cumberland Co, VA, who was the son of Christopher
CHAFFIN. b. 1696.

This was Joseph's second marriage. He was around 55, when he married
Mollie Canute/Cornett.

Can anyone tell me if CHAFFIN is a Scottish name? Does anyone know what
part of Scotland, the CHAFFINs might have come from?

Any help is appreciated, since I am very new at searching my ethnic
background.

Thanks,
Marylyn
