Mark,

Welcome back to the US. How is London in the winter?

Bob Letson and I did some checking and find that Roanoke, VA can mean any
number of things, not necessarily the city of Roanoke.

In the 1850 census Isham gave his age as 45 birth place as NC. In the 1880
and 1900 census Charles Wesley said his father was born in VA. We don't know
which is correct, if either. RMS wrote that Isham was born near Roanoke, VA
4 Mar 1804 and made a ? after the date.

There are a lot of unknowns concerning Philip during that time. He sold 115
acres of land in SC 7 Aug 1801; his son Philip was born 9 Sep 1802 in SC. We
don't know if he stayed in SC; moved back to NC; or moved to VA. The
Ancestral File gives marriage date of Philip & Mary Vest as 13 April 1805 in
Stokes Co., NC. I contacted 2 of the Submitters and they both expressed
doubts about the accuracy of this. Mary's sister Elizabeth was married on
that date and recorded in Stokes Co. A marriage for Mary is not recorded.

Also, the whereabouts of Mary Vest between 1790 and 1807 are a mystery.
According to the 1790 census of Stokes Co., Philip Sutherlin and William Vest
were neighbors, but we don't know if Mary moved from VA to Stokes Co. with
her parents, or remained in VA. I realize am a very definite minority on
this, but I still don't believe that Mary Vest was the mother of my ancestor,
Charles.

Around and around we go,

Elmer
