Group:

For those interested in Philip and Mary (Vest) Sutherlin of Orange Co., IN,
here are three more letters from Elmer and Bob today that I'll forward along
to all of you:

(1.)

Mark,

Of course Mary Vest was old enough to be the mother of Charles, as Nancy
Vest was m. in 1807 and had to be born around 1790. I have nothing on the
other daughter.

I feel the info from Amelia Standley about the two daughters of Mary Vest is
pretty solid. Amelia Standford said Mary was a widow with two daughters.
In the 1860 Census of Young Co., TX James George, William Sutherlin and
Nancy Covington (Ashley's widow) were neighbors. Amelia was an adult by
then and should have remembered Nancy Vest George well.

Also there are many connections. James and Nancy Vest lived in Harrison Co.
where Philip & Mary apparently first lived. Ishum & Samuel married in
Harrison Co. It seems likely that David Sutherlin moved to Putnam Co., IN
with the Georges (a guess). Ashley might have lived in Vermilion Co. near
the Georges. William, and later Ashley's family, moved to Texas to be near
the Georges. The Georges and Sutherlins moved to WA together. The George
researchers think Philip S. George was Philip Sutherln George.

Charles Sutherlin wss born in Nov 1795, and William was born in late 1798
(Off hand I do not have his birth date handy). Then Philip Sutherlin
fathered 7 more children by 1809, a span of 11 years. It is now my feeling
that the 8 youngest almost had to be by Mary Vest as Philip did not have
much time between children.

Grace Marks, a granddaughter of Charles, apparently had loads of Sutherlin
data and she was not sure if Mary was mother of Charles (in her letters to
RMS, she seemed doubtful and mentiioned that she felt Philip was married
previously). I find that rather unusual. Also Charles stayed in Orange
Co., IN and Philip lived in Clay Co., IN, while the other children moved
together to other parts of the country.

(2.)

Mark,

I forgot to add that when I began researching the Sutherlins 5 or 6 years
ago, I thought Mary Vest was mother of Charles, so I did considerable
research on the Vests of VA and NC.

Stokes Co. marriage records show that Nancy Vest m. James George in 1807. I
could find NO other connection between Nancy Vest George and the other Vest
families that Mary was related to.

There is absolutely NO DOUBT in my mind that Nancy Vest was a daughter of
Mary Vest. The only doubt is the father of Nancy.

Elmer

(3.)

Elmer (and Mark)

Thanks Elmer for you answer. I wish we could find where they were married
and a record of it. I have looked on the web, but not in the last couple of
months, at a Vest home page and by searching for information on George
Graham Vest to see if I could find his connection to Mary. But I came up
empty. I probably should get back to it, but right now I have recently
located a "missing branch" of my Letson family in Canada. Unfortunately
none of them have ever entered anything into a computer genealogy program
and they are sending material to me. So far I have three separate file (to
be merged later) of 800+, 300+, and 200+. This has kept me out of mischief.

Some day when I get a respite, probably in midwinter, I may go back through
all my Sutherlin "stuff" and see if I can glean any clues. I appreciate all
the work you both do. Mark I have also the letter you forwarded to the
group.

Bob and Elmer, thank you for the info. I'll put this in a place where I will
find it the next time this subject comes up.
