Who was my grandfather's father? My grandfather was born 28 Feb 1895 in
Upper Lancing RSD, registration district - Steyning, sub-district -
Shoreham to Emily MITCHELL, domestic servant of Upper Lancing. There is no
father listed on his birth certificate and in column 10, "Name entered
after registration" the name William STANLEY is entered. Why was this done?
His birth appears under the name William MITCHELL in the index, but he was
known as William STANLEY while growing up in Lancing. As far as I can tell,
he was raised by Emily's parents, Frederick & Sarah MITCHELL of North Road,
Lancing. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1918 and continued to use the surname
STANLEY for the rest of his life.

I have been looking for his father for several years. If anyone has any
suggestions or ideas or can help me find this "needle in the haystack," I
would love to hear from you!
