You're right, Jim, we have a lot of work to do. I think the two Williams
which married Nancy is at the heart of the confusion. I have to delay much
in the way of input until I have time to check my records (the boss, Katie
Van der Katt, insists I go to PetsMart first).

I'm glad to see that someone is working on the William Stinnett of circa
1760, who was the probable father of Henry Stinnett and possible husband of
Nancy Carter.
There is much speculation out there that is being passed on as fact
including not paying enough attention to times and places.
I shouldn't write off the top of my head, but my material isn't readily
accessible (some lost to a computer crash), so here goes. I hope that I can
keep a semblance of organization.
I think that there is some confusion between the William Stinnett (1740/50)
of the Amherst documents and a younger William Stinnett, who I suspect was a
nephew of the older William Stinnett. Was the younger William a son of
Benjamin Jr or James? He was clearly not the older William's son, who seems
to be documented.
The first issue that needs to be dealt with is whether the older William
Stinnett married Nancy Carter - daughter of Baley Carter - in 1789. I
question the early assumption that the older William was the one that
married Nancy Carter, who I have born circa 1769. Nancy's actual birth date
is unknown, but an earlier birth date assumes that she married the older
William Stinnett.
Those of us descended from TN and AR Stinnetts are desperately trying to
hook into the greater Stinnett tree, but still have no proof that I have
seen.
There was a William Stinnett in 1790 NC along with probable brother John. A
Jeremiah King lived between them. William and John next appear in TN.
William disappears from TN about the time that a William Stinnett of the
same age appears in AR. Appearing in AR about the same time and living in
proximity were three or more additional and younger Stinnetts.
Among the younger Stinnetts in AR were Henry Stinnett and Baley Stinnett. I
will take credit for the speculation that Baley Stinnett was named for Baley
Carter and that he was a possible son of Nancy Carter Stinnett.
Henry Stinnett, the first sheriff of Pope Co, AR, had a son named Henry
Carter Stinnett. From the son's middle name, some have extrapolated that
Henry had the middle name of Carter, as well. I have seen nothing to support
that extrapolation. At any rate, it is easy to see that the Carter name may
have been in honor of Baley Carter - making Henry a possible son of Nancy
Carter.
I hook in with Henry being the bondsman for his sister, Sarah, when she
married Richard S Witt in TN.
There was a family relationship between William Stinnett (1760) and the
younger Stinnetts, but we do not know enough to say whether the younger were
sons or nephews or a mixture.
There was a later William King Stinnett from whom some have extrapolated
that William (1760) was also William King Stinnett. William and William King
were probably living together pre-1850, but it is unclear whether it was
William or William King who was the head of the household listed as William
K.
I have SPECULATED that William of 1760 was married to Nancy Carter and
listed (SPECULATED) possible children as Henry (1790/1800), Benjamin Marion,
Sarah, John, Baley, David and Nancy.
We must keep William (1740/1750) and William (1760) separated. There is
every indication that the older William died in Amherst Co, VA and the
younger died in, or around, Pope Co, AR.
