Hello Neal,
Well I'm red in the face for leading you astray about the Stephen Stackhouse
being in Doug Knoxes book - and glad that I suggested sending it. It really
is a wonderful effort and I would like to see it get the widest distribution
possible.
FYI, while I don't have proof yet, I am working on the theory that I descend
from Isaac Stackhouse's brother John. If so, then we both likely descend
from the John Stackhouse who appears in old Frederick Co., Va. ca. 1750. I
have been looking for his ancestry for nearly 10 years now and still not a
clue. I have quite a lot of data on these folks while they were still in Va.
I just recently optained a copy of a Harrison County, Va. Marriage Bond
signed by Isaac in 1797. I say "signed" because there is very clearly a
signature on it. All of the Harrison Co. deeds and other documents executed
by Isaac always had him making a mark. So either he learned to write in his
50's (not unheard of back then) or there is another Isaac Stackhouse
floating around Harrison Co. in the late 18th century. Another puzzle...
Take Care,-Phil
