Subject: [SNELL] gift certificates for DNA tests, until 12/31
Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2007 07:25:58 EST

As co-administrator of the Snell surname study at Family Tree DNA, I want to
make others aware of the availability of gift certificates to be applied
towards the cost of either a new kit for a Y-DNA test or a mtDNA test at
FamilyTreeDNA. These are:
two $30 Y-DNA37 2007 Gift Certificates
two $15 Y-DNA25 2007 Gift Certificates
two $15 mtDNA 2007 Gift Certificates

I do not receive any compensation of any kind as administrator of this
group. My sole reward is to help others find a way to confirm their research into
their family surname.

These gift certificates cannot be used for upgrades on existing kits, or for
orders previously placed. You can use a gift certificate to order a kit for
yourself, or for someone else; there is a limit of one gift certificate per
kit. They are available as of November 6, and orders must be placed by
December 31st of this year.

The orders that are eligible for the gift certificates must be placed by a
particular method and authorized by me, so please contact me privately
(off-list) to discuss this further. I can also explain to you the proper use of the
Y-DNA and mtDNA testing, before you commit yourself to ordering the test.
Briefly, Y-DNA testing is for Snell biological male descendants with no
intervening female connections. MtDNA testing can be used by a Snell female -- not
to find her Snell ancestors, but to trace the "deep ancestry" of her female
line (this will follow the line of her mother's mother's mother's mother's
mother....and so on).

I am a granddaughter of Miriam Snell of Campbell County, VA. She was a
daughter of Bezer Madison Snell (1857-1924) of Charlotte and Campbell counties of
Virginia. My mother's cousin was the first participant in this test, and
his DNA matches the DNA for other descendants of Thomas Snell of Warwickshire,
England, and Bridgewater, MA. If there is someone who wishes to know if his
DNA matches that particular group, this would be an opportunity to do so at a
reduced cost.

Whether you are a descendant of Thomas Snell of Warwickshire, or a member of
another Snell group altogether, does not make a difference to me. In fact,
I would like to get other Snell family groups into the study, as those
results would eventually help others identify their biological Snell families, and
that would assist them in their research focus. That has happened in other
surname studies where there is more than one haplogroup and more than one
biological family group.

I want to point out that DNA testing is a useful tool to aid genealogy
research, but it is not a substitute or replacement for traditional research
methodology.

You can find the study home page here, with a link to the results:
