Hello, John,
I have not had anyone with the SHIELS spelling of the surname participate in
our Y-DNA test yet. The spelling of the surname as you indicated is
interchangeable so it would be great to have your spelling included as a
variant. It doesn't matter how early or late your ancestor immigrated.
What we learn is to which DNA family one belongs and then the participants
can compare family information should they find another or others who
descend from a common DNA family.
I sponsored a male SHIELDS family member and my SHIELDS relative matched
with another whose ancestor came later to the U.S.A. from Scotland, so
somewhere back in time, we have a common ancestor. The other person thinks
his Scotland ancestor came from Ireland, so we are still trying to discover
if we can find that common ancestor. If more men participate in time, there
can be more sharing of family lineages and historical information that could
result in finding where families connect.
At this time we have 6 unique SHIELDS DNA families. Perhaps your surname
would match with one of those already tested going by the SHIELDS surname,
or perhaps yours will be a unique line. Only DNA will give that answer.
I don't know where in Ireland my ancestor came from. Family stories tell us
that the family left from County Cork, but their birthplaces are unknown.
In your case, perhaps you and your brother could go together on the cost and
just sponsor one of you. We would be delighted to have a SHIELS among our
participants, and in the process would be delighted to learn about your
historical family information. Please feel free to contact me personally if
you have further questions.
Audrey

The Shields list seems to have activity regarding DNA for males to determine
which lines are related. Has anyone here subscribed?
The spelling in my family has varied starting (in English) as Shiel, Sheil,
then add another L or D or DS, etc. Most of the entries on the SHIELDS list
are for earlier settlers in the US whereas my father emigrated from Mayo in
the 1920s.
My brother and I are interested.
Jack
