My great-grandparents were born in Ottersberg, northeast of Bremen. I can trace them back through church records to Wohler Cordes, b. 1713 whose father was a Johann Cordes, 'gewesener baumann in Tarmstedt. I have a contact on geneanet who has lots of Cordes persons around Tarmstedt going back to the 1500's. But he says my Johann came from somewhere else to marry Gesche Schroeder and that they lived in a building belonging to the monastery of Zeven. He is absolutely adamant that my Cordes have nothing to do with Hamburg or Spain. Because of my DNA matches and my grandfather's story that his Cordes family were French nobles I don't believe my Cordes origins are German. The provenal Cordes were ennobled after coming from Spain. Later on in the late 1500's they were involved in political struggle. They were cousins of a wealthy Sephardic merchant family, the Pauls, who converted to Christianity in 1512. So they must have been Sephardic as well. I believe my ancestors w!
ere a part of this family that was originally de Cordova. I believe they went to Antwerp from France and then to Hamburg. My father's brother said the family was from Hamburg. What I can't figure out is why my ancestors would have drifted down to Ottersberg where they are listed as brger and kaufmann...
So, do you know anything about the Cordes in this area and why they would have settled in Ottersberg?
I am so happy to have found a new cousin with so much valuable knowledge
Robert
