ROBERT J. WAY, the present clerk of courts of Turner county, S. Dak., first saw
the light in Ellenburg, N. Y., May 15, 1866. He was but twelve years of age when
he accompanied his parents to Dakota territory, in 1878 and since then has
always lived in Turner county. In the districts schools he acquired a practical
education, and remained at home till he was nineteen years of age. He worked at
whatever he could find to do that produced a living, being employed in drilling
wells for four years, and two years at farming. In 1894 he was elected to his
present office, clerk of courts, and re-elected to that position in 1896. He
affiliates with the Republican party in politics, stanchly supporting its
principles, and is a member of the K. of P., and A. O. U. W. orders at Parker.
Mr. Way was united in marriage April 3, 1891, to Miss Mable Gorton, by whom
he has a family of three children, Ray, Lloyd and Gail. Mrs. Way is a native of
Iowa, and came to Dakota in 1876 with her parents.
The parents of Mr. Way, Tabor I. and Mary (Henderson) Way, now reside in
Dolton township, Turner county. He is a native of Vermont, and removed to a
place near Plattsburgh, N. Y., with his parents when but twelve years of age. He
was married in New York, and in 1868 came with his wife and family to Iowa,
staying there until 1878, when he arrived in Dakota and located in Middleton
township, Turner county, on a farm. This property he improved and made his home
for two years, when he sold out and settled where he now lives. He and his wife
were the parents of ten children, Robert J. Way being the second child in order
of their birth.
