Amelia Dewald was born on September 22, 1903 on a farm north of Tyndall, South Dakota to Jacob and Elizabeth (Nusz) Hauck. When Amelia was four years old, the family moved to a farm east of Menno, South Dakota where she grew up. She was baptized in infancy and confirmed on March 24, 1918 by Rev. Rittehouse at Salem Reformed Church in Menno. Amelia was united in marriage to Emil Dewald on January 22, 1924 in Menno and four children were born to the union. She loved flowers and gardening, and enjoyed sewing and quilting. Amelia was a member of Frieden’s Reformed UCC Church, Frieden’s Ladies Guild, the Good Samaritan Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She died on Monday, July 5, 2004 at the Westwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 100 years.
Amelia is survived by her children: Luella (Paul) Gaiser of Worthington, Minnesota; Verletta Wittmeier of Tripp; Violet Mulloy of Sioux City; and Arlo (Maydean) Dewald of Tripp; 17 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil, on July 29, 1973, one great-grandchild, one great-great-grandchild, her parents, all of her brothers and sisters, and two sons-in-law, John Wittmeier and Joseph Mulloy.
