Hi Anne,
The following records have been transcribed from the LDS films of the OPRs.
Old Luce.
Robt. Kelton and Rosana(sic) McLean in Glenluce were legally proclaimed in
this Congregation in order to marriage & no objections being offered, they
were accordingly married at Wigtown by the Revd. Mr Young on the twenty
fourth May Eighteen hundred & thirty six years.
Matthew, lawful Son of Robt Kelton & Rosanna McLean born at Bridge of Park
the Seventeenth June and baptized the sixth July Eighteen hundred and
thirty Six by the Revd J McDowall

Hugh Purdie, and Mary Kelton at Logan Mill were married 3d Jany 1837
John Kelton, and Margaret Patty, at Logan Mill were married 12 Novemr 1837
William McMurray and Mary Kelton, at Logan Mill were married 16th* January
1841
* The second digit was smudged, so 6 is a best guess, not a certainty.
You queried if it was the same Mary KELTON who married Hugh PURDIE and
William McMURRAY. If she died in Scotland after 1854, you could try a
search her death registration on Scotlandspeople under both KELTON /
McMURRAY and KELTON / PURDIE.
The fact that Robert KELTON married Rosanna McLEAN at Wigtown may be
because she was from that parish. The proclamation would have been required
in both parishes, hence the record in the Kirkmaiden register. In that
case, there should also have been a record in the Wigtown register, but the
latter has large gaps, and after 1782, there are only 5 marriage records.
The wording, however, suggests Rosanna was resident in Glenluce, (which
could refer to the town or the parish). Could it be that she had
connections with the Rev. Peter YOUNG?
The following is extracted from <
http://www.wigtown-heritage.org/applegarth.htm >
"The Reverend Peter Young was minister of the Established Church for 65
years. Born in Leith in 1773, he came to the area as tutor to the family of
the Honourable Patrick Maitland of Balgreggan, Stoneykirk. Captain Maitland
was the son of Charles, 6th Earl of Lauderdale, who, as brother of the Duke
of Lauderdale, had inherited the Earldom.
This was a very influential family indeed. In 1799 he was presented by the
Earl of Galloway, the Patron, to Wigtown and ordained the same year.
Marrying Maitland McCulloch in 1801, he was therefore connected to many of
the leading families of the district."
The following, listed under KELTON, were taken from the Index to the
Wigtown Free Press:
Mrs d at Annan 1844 26/12 1f
Margaret McClure d at Logan Mills 1863 26/03 4f
Matthew miller d at Kirkmaiden 1856 18/12 4g
William m Agnes Kerr at Dumfries 1863 31/02 4f

Bruce

Good Morning Listers:
I know this is a terribly long email but I am hoping that something
will sound familiar to another researcher.
I am planning a trip to the Dumfries/Galloway area in October and am
thrilled with the idea of being in the same area that my
gggrandparents left so many years ago.
Back in the early 1970"s my deceased Aunt had a researcher locate
records for one of our ancestors ie: John Kelton son of Mathew Kelton
& Elizabeth Clark. The records were limited, however over the
following years I have been able to piece together a possible outline
of this family. The records that are going online are such a help
when looking for new areas to research.
So far----------
Mathew Kelton b. about 1785 in Nithsdale, Dumsfreeshire, m. Elizabeth
Clark about 1809. [possibly the daughter of Robert Clark & Margaret
Colltart b.about 5 Oct. 1788 in Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire, she
died prior to the 1841 census] Their children that I have found so
far from various sources include--
1. Margaret Kelton, bp. 27 May 1810, Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire
[No futher info]
2. John Kelton, bp. 28 Aug. 1811, Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire
[m.12 Nov. 1837 Logan Mill, Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire to Margaret
Pattie b. 3 Jan 1818 Kirkmaiden by Drumsmore, Wigtownshire, d. of
James Pattie & Margaret Rodie]
3. Robert Kelton, bp. 14 Aug 1814, Peninghame, Wigtownshire [no
further info] [Could be the same Robert who m. Rosana McLean 24 May
1836 Old Luce, Wigtownshire.]
4. Mary Kelton, bp. 4 Aug 1817, Peninghame, Wigtownshire [Could be
the same Mary who m. 1-Hugh Purdie 3 Jan 1837, Kirkmaiden & possibly
2-William McMurray Jan 1841] Mary & William are listed in the 1851
census with 2 children, Jane & John.
5. Elizabeth Kelton, bp 3 May 1819, Peninghame, Wigtownshire [no further
info.]
6. Jean Kelton b. about 1823, Stonykirk, Wigtownshire [listed as
unmarried in 1841 & 1851 census]
7. Maria Kelton, b 9 Jun 1825, Stonykirk, Wigtownshire. [Could be the
same Maria who m. William McClumpha 9 Sep 1857 in Kirkmaiden. 3
children William, Mathew & Maria listed in the IGI database of the LDS
church.]
8. William Kelton, b. 17 Feb. 1828, Stonykirk, Wigtownshire [could be
the same William who m.1st. Margaret McClure 29 Sep 1857 in
Kirkmaiden and had 3 ch. Agnes, John & William all listed in the IGI
database, & a possible 2nd Agnes Kerr 24 dec 1863.]
This is what I know of John Kelton and one of his sons Alexander.
John Kelton and Margaret his wife listed in the 1841 census which
looks to be the correct family. Their ch. in birth order are Robert
b.Kirkmaiden 1838, John b.Barony, Lanarkshire 1840, Mathew b.
Kirkmaiden 1842, James b. South Africa 1844, Alexander b. South
Africa 1846 and probably others unknown to me at this time.
After having at least 3 children, John Kelton and his wife Margaret
Pattie left their home area of Logans Mill, Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire,
c. 1843 and traveled with at least 3 children to Capetown, Port
Elizabeth, South Africa. I have figured the time frame of their
travel based on the birth of Mathew b. 20 May 1842 in Scotland and the
next James b. 18 Apr. 1844 in South Africa. They never returned to
Scotland and died in South Africa. John in 1881 & Margaret in 1878 It
appears that about this time the family name seems to change from
Kelton to Calton, Colton, Carlton.
At least two of their children Robert & Alexanders moved to the United
States c. 1870. and established families Robert in the Connecticut and
New York area and Alexander in the Boston, Massachusetts area. I have
Alexanders family documented down to the present. Robert married but
did not have children that I have been able to document. Robert & his
wife Mary stepped in to care for Alexanders infant daughter Julia
after the death of the mother from TB.
John's father Mathew was still living as a widower at Logans Mill in
both 1841 and 1851, as were a brother William and 3 sisters Mary, Jean
& Maria, so it appears that only John made this move to South Africa
Would any researcher on this list have some ideas on what might have
been behind such a move from Scotland to South Africa.
It would be lovely to put some meat on the bones of this family. And
sort out the areas where I have really gone far astray.
