Further to comments by Frances and Alex, I was looking at the OPR film for
Sorbie and Stoneykirk at the weekend, and made the following notes:
Sorbie.
At the start of the section, Deaths 1706 to 1716, the film is stamped with
the following comment: "Bleed Through Smeared Ink ALL VOLUME". When you see
this stamp, you know its going to be difficult to read.
The section is mostly Collections and Distributions of poor money, with a
few Mortcloth records embedded amongst the lists of Collections. They
contain a few names, but no dates or relationships. The best you could hope
for is a year accompanying the name, assuming you can read the name.
There are 2 deaths with full detail, one in 1813 and one in 1818. They are
both children of Elliot William Davidson, the minister.
Stoneykirk:
From 1787 thru 1797, although it is hard to read much of it, it gives
names, month of death, last residence, and where buried.
From 1839 thru 1854, the film is easy to read. What's more, get names and
ages, and full dates of both death and burial. You don't get residence or
relationships, but wow, I wish the Machars parishes had OPRs like this!

That's why the OPR index is so useful. The IGI appears to list all births
and marriages under civil registration 1855-1874 (in Scotland).

The general rule is that IGI does not list deaths, or children known to
have died under the age of 8, but exceptions to the latter occur
especially in the controlled extraction programme (generally these have
batch numbers starting with a letter except F). I know of one entry where
the individual was dead at the IGI date (one of twins, as specified in the
original entry).

This may be a little optimistic for the majority of Wigtonshire
researchers - here is the availability of burial registers for the local
parishes:
Glasserton 885 nil
Inch 886 1843-47
Kirkcolm 887 1794-1854
Kirkcowan 888 nil
Kirkinner 889 nil
Kirkmaiden 890 1716-1854
Leswalt 891 1729-1843
Mochrum 892 nil
New Luce 893 1730-1819,1822-54
Old Luce 894 1732-1854
Penninghame 895 nil
Portpatrick 896 1783-1818
Sorbie 897 1706-1716,1813,1818
Stoneykirk 898 1778-97,1839-54
Stranraer 899 nil
Whithorn 900 nil
Wigtown 901 nil
The keeping of a burial register was one of the earliest and least
observed requirements placed on incumbents.
