Thank you for your reply. I think it is possible that your John and my James
could indeed be brothers. However, I have been unable to find any more
information on James other than he was shown as an "Ironmonger" on his
marriage certificate when he wed Margaret Gray (Kirkmichael, Ayr) in 1830.

I have found Mary Stewart on the IGI, born in Kirkcowan in 1786, Father John
Stewart, Mother Mrs John Stewart(big help!)
I have been thinking for some time that the "Hamilton Stewart" family are
connected but so far have found no evidence.

Any help you, or any other lister, could give would be very much
appreciated.
