Just to let you know that my cousins and I spent two days doing the
Sighthill Cemetery last year and we had no problem at all. It is a
beautiful cemetery and very well kept - I saw no vandalism at all. You can
see the tower blocks which are close by and where all the trouble was.
Obviously you do not go to these places in the dark, but during the day all
is peaceful. The Necropolis is much the same, though there has been some
vandalism. People were walking their dogs and children in both the
cemeteries, and they both are very pleasant and interesting to be in. Of
course, you have to watch out for yourself where every you may be - it is a
fact of life in this day an age.!

The following is a sampling of information I received from listers regarding
purchasing gravestones/headstones for family members buried in cemeteries in
Glasgow.

Quite a few of my relatives are buried in Sighthill Cemetery, Springburn,
Glasgow. This seems to be the nearest cemetery, other than the Necropolis,
behind Glasgow Cathedral, for those who lived in Townhead or in the northern
areas of Glasgow.

There was a cautionary note from some listers that there has been much
vandalism and out and out theft of gravestones in some of the cemeteries.
We were also cautioned by the docent at Glasgow Cathedral gift shop not to
wander around the Necropolis looking for other relatives' gravesites because
of the "druggies" and other unsavoury characters frequenting this cemetery.
This is an appalling situation and one that should not obtain:

Thank you to the listers on the Lanark gen. site for the following
information on costs, etc:

#3 Response:

Headstone advertisement pricing stones at around £600,
which may or may not include other costs.
There is a place at Eglinton Toll, Glasgow, called
Lipton's.

#4 Response:

Headstone information
Mossmans
284 High Street,
Glasgow, Scotland
Attn. Jim Bruce Fax 0141 552 2161

Lister Duncan Malcolm went above and beyond by making a
personal visit to Mossman's to make enquiries.

The cost of stones varies according to size and
materials - granite is most expensive and lasts much longer
without maintenance.

Cemetery fee: £95 for foundation works
Stone: £200 - £600 depending on the size and quality
Inscription: £1.65 to £2.25 per letter --- with a
suggestion to cut into the stone as opposed to raised
"lead" letters as it is cheaper and lasts
longer.

Duncan wrote to Glasgow City Council Offices, 20
Trongate, Glasgow G1 5ES, but they are unable to supply
maps or plans of the cemetery for public use but he was given a contact who,
given sufficient notice, would be able to make
arrangements to direct him to the site (of his grandparents' grave.)

This information from the listers has been most helpful. I will forward
it to other gen. sites as a guideline for those who may be interested in
erecting headstones or gravestones in memory of their relatives.

In grateful appreciation,

Maisie (Mary Brown Clint) Egger
formerly of Townhead and Balornock, Glasgow
Paso Robles, California
