That's why the OPR index is so useful. The IGI appears to list all births
and marriages under civil registration 1855-1874 (in Scotland).

The general rule is that IGI does not list deaths, or children known to
have died under the age of 8, but exceptions to the latter occur
especially in the controlled extraction programme (generally these have
batch numbers starting with a letter except F). I know of one entry where
the individual was dead at the IGI date (one of twins, as specified in the
original entry).

This may be a little optimistic for the majority of Wigtonshire
researchers - here is the availability of burial registers for the local
parishes:
Glasserton885 nil
Inch886 1843-47
Kirkcolm887 1794-1854
Kirkcowan888 nil
Kirkinner889 nil
Kirkmaiden890 1716-1854
Leswalt891 1729-1843
Mochrum892 nil
New Luce893 1730-1819,1822-54
Old Luce894 1732-1854
Penninghame895nil
Portpatrick8961783-1818
Sorbie897 1706-1716,1813,1818
Stoneykirk898 1778-97,1839-54
Stranraer899 nil
Whithorn900 nil
Wigtown901 nil
The keeping of a burial register was one of the earliest and least
observed requirements placed on incumbents.
