This is my first posting to the list! I'm interested in finding out about
the Sprott and Hill families and the Davies and Crichton families. So far I
know that Thomas Sprott and Jane Hill were married on Aug 21, 1832 in the
parish of Leswalt. They were my ggg grandparents. Their daughter Margaret
Sprott was born Oct 3, 1840 in the parish of Portpatrick. Margaret
eventually ended up in Ayr and was married in Irvine to George Mitchell on
Nov 26, 1867. Their daughter Ellen, born March 28, 1880 in Dundonald
married James Davies on March 7, 1902 in Irvine. James Davies was born in
1879 (I believe in July) in Whithorn. I've not been able to find out
anything concrete about his family. I haven't been able to find a birth
certificate or christening record for him. He does show up on the 1901
census on a farm in Dundonald and his birthplace is listed as Whithorn,
Wigtownshire. On his marriage certificate he lists his parents and James
Davies, engine fitter, and Isabella Crichton, both deceased. His father may
have been from Wales and we have no information about his mother.
Unfortunately Grandpa Davies was extremely closed mouthed about his past,
and none of Ellen Mitchell's family ever met any of his relatives. The only
information he volunteered was that he was orphaned at age nine and went to
Arran to work for a shepherd. There is also some speculation that he had a
brother named George. Grandpa maintained that he never saw any of his
family again after age nine and getting info from him was like pulling
teeth. If anyone has any information on the above families or could point
me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated!
