Dear Ian, I took the opportunity today as it was good to search out Cairnryan. Yes indeed it is a puzzle, I think my next stop will be the museum or library. First I visited the graveyard which is opposite Cairnryan House, The house which is there is the lighthouse keepers cottage, but later on I learned that there had been 3 there all now turned into one. I spoke to the gentleman there, but he didn't know very much. I found a grave there for Mary Ann Murdoch wife of David McWhirter and then the same David buried 1973. I can give you the whole mi if you require it.

Next I went to the street, there are two parts to the old village, I again spoke to a young man who was very helpful, but he was more concerned with the heavy traffic cracking the buildings. (If Stena relocate there it will be worse)

House numbers seem to be non-existant now, a couple of no. 3's and 2's but the rest are names.

In the part nearer to Ayrshire there is a house which he said used to be the Cross Keys public house, and in the other section nearer to Stranraer there is a very plain "square" house next to the "Merchant's House" Restaurant which he thought could be the old coast guards house. He said there used to be a stable next to it.

As for the toll house, I am still not sure.

The village shop has just changed hands, which is a pity because apparently there used to be old postcards on the wall belonging to the previous owner. This is why I think my next stop is the Library.

Sorry this isn't very helpful, but I am trying. Diana

In the first part of the village, nearer Ayrshire there is a house that he said was called the Cross Keys pub.
