Subject: Banff to South Shields

I wonder if anyone on the list would be able to give me a clue on what would have taken my great grandfather born in Banff in 1854 to South Shields? Was there a particular trade between the two places? Was there a regular shipping run between the North-east coast and Tyneside?
I would be most grateful for any ideas.
