Hello Carol Billingham & List.
I have a mysterious James McGilvery and family who lived on my gr.
grandfather's farm for a time. They were in the 1851 census for Vaughan
Twp.on Lot 20, Concession 9, Vaughan Twp., York Co., Ont.as follows:
James McGilvery, age 50labourerb. ScotlandEst. Presbyterian

Margaret doage 52dodo
John doage 15 do dodo
Mary do age 13dodo
Sarah doage 11dodo
Donald doage 10dodo
Neil doage 8dodo
Peter doage 6dodo
James doage 2dodo

This may not be the same family, although Mary's b. date would have been
ca. 1839. James is buried in Lovat Cemetery in Bruce Co., Ont. and his
wife was Margaret Page.
Inscriptions in Lovat Cemetery:
Margaret Page, beloved wife of James McGillivray, died 29 August 1858.
James McGillivray, d.28 April, 1903 aged 69 years
native of Argyleshire, Scotland
h.w. Sarah A. McGillivray, b. March 6, 1854 d. 26 June 1930.

No matter how the name was spelled in Scotland, they mostly all changed to
McGillivray in Vaughan Twp.

My McGillivray family came from the Bunnesan, Mull area - Ardalanish, but
had been in Bunnesan before 1800. I don't know who my James is, but I felt
he must be a connection. My Gr. Grandfather, Neil McGillivray may have
sent money to help him bring his family to Canada.
Hope this is of some help. I would dearly love to know who my James
McGillivray was. It is very difficult to sort them all out.

Here is the email address of Roy McGilvray of Cumberland, Ont. who collects
McGillivray and also the Clan MacGillivlray web site with a large database.
Roy's email: cv297, @freenet.carleton.ca
Clan MacGillilray web site: http://www.allomac.com
Roy has a page on the Clan web site and may have your James McG in his
database.
