Mike and list.....

I do not know when any were born! Speculation is mid 1680s. They were adults and married in the 1712 deed, so would have been born at least bef 1691, I would think!

I did find something for Samuel SAVAGE, but not sure which one!
Watson's Annals of Phila Pa, Minutes of City Council 1704-1776, which has the following:
'Samuel Savage is admitted as freeman, and paid 11p2s6d on 4/9/1705'.

Now whether this is Samuel Sr. or his son Samuel, who could have turned 21 then, is not clear. Most genealogy records assume this is the son Samuel in Philadelphia City, as his father died 2 years later in Nov 1707 and lived in 'Rocksberry', based on his will, also in Phila County. Based on this, son Samuel would be born abt 1684.

Abstract of Will 11/12/1707 proved 11/26/1707, Rocksberry(sic), Phila Co
Book C:66
Samuel Savage, mason.
Children: Samuel, George, John, Esther and Mary.
Execs: Wife Ann and son Samuel
Wit: Thomas Rutter and Abel Noble

Son George (my line) died in c8/1719 and had 5 children but I do not have their births. Names have been found in later deeds of his property. His widow was Mary MORGAN, dau of a Young MORGAN who died in Phila c9/1708. At that time his property was being sold and daughter Mary was shown 'of full age' and wife of George SAVAGE. So she was at least 21 by 1708, and they were married, making George born about that same time or earlier......<1687.

Early church records, even in Phila Co., are lacking for these years!

Family tales tell of Samuel Savage Sr., a crew member of the 'Welcome', (arrived Oct 1682) who jumped ship and stayed in PA, rather than return to England. There is no proof of this in all the published information about the 'Welcome'! I have never found a list of the crew members on the Welcome!

John SAVAGE, a mason in Maidencreek, W Jersey province, was married to Mary at the time of the deed of 1712, so best guess is he was born in mid-1680-1691 period!

There would be one or more generations from him down to the William SAVAGE on a tax list in 1753 in Somerset Co NJ. The William SAVAGE Jr would be at least 21 then, or born bef 1732. Are there any other SAVAGEs who came to NJ area back then?

Is anyone researching William SAVAGE of Somerset Co NJ?

thanks Mike......maybe someone is out there!

Diana,

There were several Savage families that lived just north of Maidenhead, NJ in the mid to late 1700s. I don't know if anyone has made a connection to this Savage family, but it is quite possible. In the 1753 Freeholders list of Somerset Co. (they probably lived just west of Princeton) were 2 William Savages and a William Savage, Jr.

Do you know when any of Samuel Savage Sr.'s sons were born?

Thanks.

Original Message:
I have an early early will of a Samuel SAVAGE, my ancestor, who died in Roxborough, Phila Co., PA in abt 11/1707.
In his will, and subsequent land deed, one of his pieces of property, a quarry and some land, he bequeathes to his 3 sons equally. In a 1712 deed, son Samuel bought from the quarry and land from his 2 brothers, John, a mason, and wife Mary of West Jersey Province of Maidenhead, and George and his wife Mary, a stone cutter in Roxborough. I think this Maidenhead is now Lawrenceville, Mercer Co NJ........

Does anyone know of any SAVAGE descendents who would come from that area of NJ?

I have no other info on John other than his wife's name.

Two other sons of Samuel SAVAGE stayed in PA., and Samuel's line became the more prosperous one, as he married a RUTTER and her father started one of the first iron forges in PA. His son Samuel Jr continued in this business and there were intermarriages with POTTS family, founder of Pottstown, PA - also a big iron baron in PA. The book 'Potts Memorial' has information on some of the SAVAGEs in it.

George SAVAGE is my line, a mere stone cutter! He died 1719.

Anyways....just curious about the John SAVAGE in New Jersey!
