While searching each census year, i was entering "JOLLS" or "JOLES" and
entering "RI" or "NY". Then i finally got (sorta) smart and clicked on "soundex"
for the surname: JOLLS and left the state blank. It came up with all sorts of
spellings of the name JOLLS and some living in other states as well as NY and
RI.
