Mary, having researched the subject for nearly twenty years, I can tell you
that the possibility of the surname Rea being derived from Dunrea in any way
is virtually nil. The name is of Scottish origin and is a sept (allied
family or surname) of the Clan MacRae. More likely, Gatewood's middle name,
Dunn, was derived from an ancestor's surname, Dunn. It was quite common for
middle names to be taken from a mother's maiden name, forinstance. If his
mother's maiden name wasn't Dunn, then it could come from an earlier
ancestor. But, as surnames go, in twenty years, I've never encountered any
Dunreas.
