Group,
My Rea ancestor is Rev. D.D. John Rea, b. 31 Oct 1777 Ireland, d. 12 Feb
1855 in Harrison Co., OH. Buried at Beech Springs Cemetery in Harrison Co.,
OH with wife, Elizabeth Christy. Minister at Beech Springs Church in
Harrison Co., OH for 47 years.
His parents were James and Isabella (Rea) Rea (story goes they were cousins)
in northern Ireland (Antrim or Tyrone). Story continues that John left Ire
as a teenager (Catholic church wanted him to become a Priest, Mother didn't
want that) to come to America to his Uncle's in PA. Finding his Uncle's
lifestyle not to his likening, he left for Washington, PA where he was in
the first graduating class of Washington and Lee College there in 1804.
Rev. John and Elizabeth had quite a large family, many staying in the
Harrison/Jefferson Co., OH area. Some of them were Samuel, Andrew, Francis
(a Dr.), William Purdy, and others (I'm pulling this from memory as I can't
get to my Rea files right now).
My ancestor was Samuel m/ Ruth Anne Robinson. He drowned in the White Woman
River in Coshocton Co., OH in 1835?.
His son James Samuel m/ Elizabeth Burchfield from East Springfield, the
Jefferson Co/Harrison Co line in OH. They left that area by flatboat down
the Ohio River to Adams Co., OH and settled there.
His son C.B. (Charles Burchfield) Rea m/ Hattie Alma Gibboney in Adams Co.,
OH.
His son Phillip H. Rea (my grandfather) m/ Margaret Elizabeth Hamilton in
Adams Co.,OH
Any cousins out there?
Thanks,
Jane White
