Hi Ed:

Lewis Rhea was the son of James Rhea and Elizabeth Tipton. At least a part
of this family group was included in the information I submitted to RHEA-L
several years ago, to be included in the group, TEAM 8, JAMES AND JESSE
RHEA. It should be in RHEA-L Archives. I do have a bit more information on
James Rhea and Elizabeth Tipton now.

Here's a brief outline of this family: Please note that James Rhea in Gen.
1 is the grandfather of Lewis and Spencer Rhea:

GEN. 1: *James Rhea m. Mary Paul. Mary was the daughter of John Paul and
Mary Baxter, of Rockbridge Co., VA. James and Mary settled in Blount Co.,
TN. Children: (1) Elizabeth m. William Miller; (2) Esther/Easter m.
Abraham Pruitt; (3) Margaret; (4) Rebecca m. Benjamin Tipton (see note
below); (5) John m. **Rebecca Miller; (6) *Jesse m. Margaret Blair; (7)
Sally/Sarah.

Gen. 2: *Jesse Rhea m. Margaret Blair 7 Dec 1802 in Blount Co., TN.
Margaret was the daughter of John Blair and Mary --?--. The Blairs migrated
from VA to Cresaptown, MD. Later, Margaret and several of her siblings went
to Blount Co., TN. Children of Jesse and Margaret: (1) *James m. Elizabeth
Tipton; (2) Mary/Polly m. James Coulter; (3) Rebecca m. Manly Keeble; (4)
John m. Jane/Jany Cameron; (5) William Henderson m. Eliza Stephens; (6)
Pleasant, died age 12; (7) Elizabeth/Betsy m. Richard Porter Keeble; (8)
Sarah/Sally m. John Morgan; (9) Margaret m. Joel Duncan Stephens; (10)
Evalina m. William Cameron; (11) Lavina m. John Franklin Stephens; (12)
Wylie m. Elizabeth Lee; (13) Lewis m. Mary Eliza Humphreys; (14) Riley B. m.
Susan W. Humphreys; (15) Eliza/Elizabeth L. m. Alexander Lee.

Jesse and Margaret Rhea's child #13, Lewis, went to Oregon with his in-laws,
the Humphreys. His brother, #14 Riley B., later followed them to Oregon and
married Susan W. Humphreys there.

GEN. 3: *James Rhea m. Elizabeth/Betsy Tipton in Blount Co. TN on 16 Nov
1826. They had ten children: (1) Jesse, (2) Nancy, (3) James, (4) William;
(5) Spencer, (6) Mary, (7) John, (8) Sarah, (9) Lewis, and (10) Richard.
The 1850 McMinn Co. TN census lists the household of James and Elizabeth
Rhea: James age 40, b. TN; Elizabeth age 38, b. KY; Jesse 22; Nancy, 20;
James 19; William 16; Spencer 14; Mary 12; John 11; Sarah 8; Lewis 6; and
Richard 4.

The family migrated west, settling in Jasper (or Benton) Co., Missouri.
James was deceased before his father Jesse Rhea died in Monroe Co., TN on 10
July 1859. Some heirs of James were named in father Jesse's protracted
probate records.

One Elizabeth Rhea married in Jasper Co., MO on 28 September 1860 to G.W.
Williams. This is probably Elizabeth (Tipton) Rhea, widow of James Rhea.

No, unfortunately, the parentage of Elizabeth Tipton has not been proven
yet. I was planning to spend a week in Blount and Monroe Counties in
East Tennessee, and several of Jesse Rhea's descendants were going to meet
in Knoxville to try to find her parents. Since Hurricane Lili appeared to
be heading directly for the Houston/Galveston area last Sunday
night, I cancelled my flight. I'm now planning to go up there some time in
early November or December. Hope we can find Elizabeth's parents.
There's some speculation about possibilities.

**As a bit of lagniappe, Rebecca Rhea, daughter of James and Mary (Paul)
Rhea, and sister of Jesse Rhea, was the first wife of Benjamin Tipton, a
Revolutionary War soldier who died in Blount Co., TN. After she died,
Benjamin married 2nd Rebecca Cusick.
