Robert Joseph (Bob) Rhea
Died: 09-14-2002 Robert Joseph “Bob” Rhea, 60, of Oriole Drive, died
Saturday morning at Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Rhea grew up being a part of the business his family operated, Rhea’s
Food Market, and operated the business from 1967-1980. He continued to own
the Rhea Building, which he developed into office space. He was educated in
the Greeneville School System and was graduated from Greeneville High School
in 1960. Mr. Rhea was also a 1962 graduate of Georgia Military College in
Milledgeville, Ga., and was graduated in 1964 from the University of
Tennessee in Knoxville with a bachelor of science degree in business
administration. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as an officer in
the U.S. Army from 1965-1967. While at GHS, he was a member of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars Drum & Bugle Corps, The Presidents. Mr. Rhea was a lifelong
member of Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Kerbela Temple in
Knoxville. He was also a member of Scottish Rite 32nd degree KCCH,
Greeneville Lodge #3, F&AM, and East Tennessee Management Club. Mr. Rhea had
served as past president of the Greene County Chapter of UT Alumni and for a
number of years had served as secretary-treasurer of Greeneville Shrine Club
and Greene County Scottish Rite Club. His family noted that he was an avid UT
Vols fan and an Atlanta Braves fan, but they said his greatest love was
NASCAR racing and traveling. They also said he was a loving husband, father,
and friend, whose family was very important to him.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years: Judye Chesnut Rhea; a son and
daughter-in-law: Robert Joseph “Rob” Rhea III and his wife, Jonna Shipley
Rhea, of Greeneville; his father-in-law: Walter L. Chesnut of Leitchfield,
Ky.; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law: Elaine and Steve Robinson of
Signal Mountain and Judy Chesnut of Sacramento, Ky.; three special nephews:
Jeffrey Robinson of North Bend, Wash., Matthew Robinson of Shepherdstown,
W.Va., and Michael Chesnut of Memphis; and several aunts, uncles, and
cousins, including special aunts and uncles: Edyth Rhea of Knoxville Kenneth
and Bertram Rhea of Chuckey, Mary Keys of Limestone, and Mabel Campbell
Mercer of Ten Mile.
He was a son of the late Naomi (Campbell) and Robert Joseph Rhea Sr. The
family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Kiser Funeral
Home. The funeral service will be held at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning at
Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church with interment in Oak Grove
Cemetery. The Rev. Roy Blakeburn, the Rev. Jamie Lively, and the Rev. Tom
Lynch will officiate. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state 30
minutes prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Charles White, Joe Henley, Ned Sanders, Bill Foland,
Cliff Odom, and L.C. Bowers. Honorary pallbearers will be Caroll Rhea, Roger
Rhea, James Keys, Jim Mercer, Jack Ayers, Kline Jones, Lennis Koontz, Walter
Dyer, Don Southerland, Jack Archer, and Dave Saylor.
