I'd like to address this to Pat Hall, who, I know, is the Morgan County, IL expert on the Rheas. But all responses are welcomed.
I have four Ray brothers--Abner, David, Moses, and Hiram that bounced around Morgan, Cass, and Mason Counties in IL in the 1830's thru the 1850's. The brothers all were born in TN in 1813, 1820, 1822, and 1824 respectively. I find no parents for them, looking at Rays, Rheas, and Reaughs.
In the early 1840's and after, they resided in T19R10 of Mason County. Within that same township is land purchased by both Richard Rhea and John Rhea. The next township east is found more Rheas including the children of John and Margaret Harbison Rhea (using the name Ray). And, I also have reason to believe, by association, that the brothers were in Cass County in the townships immediately below for a time in the 1830's.
I do not necessarily believe that the brothers were Rheas, and linked to the other Rheas of the Morgan area, particulary since the brothers all came by way of TN. But I do have a couple of particular questions for Pat. There is a Martha Ray in the 1840 Cass Co. census. Is this Martha the mother to your James Rhea? Or could it be Margaret Harbison Rhea using an "also know as?" Thanks.
Jim Ray
