Denise,
Thanks for the explanation. I didn't know there was any project like this
going on. Sounds real interesting.

Now, I wonder what kind of results I would get since I no longer have my own
DNA? Last August I had a DNA transplant and now have my brother's DNA in
me. What do they do with people who have had DNA transplants?
Don

DNA typing can be done on either the Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA
(mtDNA). It can be used to prove descent from a common ancestor when
genealogical evidence is absent.
So for my case, I have Pleasant Vincent Rhea born 1821 probably in Lincoln
Co. and died 1901 in Texas, TN. John and Sally Rhea of Lincoln Co., TN had a
son Pleasant Vincent Rhea, but he was born in 1803 in Lincoln Co., TN and
died circa 1864 in Arkansas. My P. V. Rhea has been a brick wall or over 20
years and I have never been able to ind proof of his parents.
Using Y-chromosome DNA typing a comparison could be made between on of my
Rhea male relative's (uncles, cousins etc.) DNA and a Rhea male descendant
of P. V. Rhea (1803-1864). If there was a match then we could assume a
common ancestor. The number of matches tells how far back the common
ancestor was.
Another comparison could be made to the descendants of Rev. Joseph Rhea to
see if my PV Rhea is connected to this Rhea line.

See the following urls:

http://www.oxfordancestors.com/yline.html
http://ancestry.com/genetics/main.htm

Mitochondrial DNA is passed from mother to child only, the father does not
pass his mtDNA to his children so this line would be the female line - your
mother - her mother - her mother etc. In my case my ggg grandmother Mary
Elizabeth Fannin married P. V. Rhea (1821-1901). Her mother was Sally Doak,
said to be the daughter of William Doak and the daughter or granddaughter of
a Choctow chief. I see no way to prove this, but mtDNA testing might prove
matrilineal descent from the Choctaw tribe for me. I have to find female
descendants of Mary E. Fannin since my descent is mixed from PV Rhea and
Mary E. Fannin through male and female lines.

I hope that this makes sense, I have trouble figuring it out, especially the
information on the GENEALOGY-DNA list.
