Dear Michael,
The Rheas who were in Tennessee at the time of the War were almost to a man,
Confederates. The sons of Matthew Rhea and his wife, Mary Looney Rhea, in
Fayette County, were all in the CSA. The son, also a Matthew Rhea, was
killed in battle and the sword he carried was one the family records as
having been presented to Lt. Matthew Rhea at the Battle of Guilford
Courthouse, by Gen. Nathaniel Greene (the presenter has not been documented
that I have seen).
His namesake, Matthew, was killed ant the sword, inscribed, "Victory or
Death", was taken by the union soldiers who killed him.
Another son of Matthew and Mary L. Rhea, was my gggrandfather, Walter
Preston Rhea. He survived the War but died at age 42.
There must be many others, and perhaps the list can respond with the service
of known CSA soldiers in the family Rhea.
Best wishes
Anne Rhea Bruce
