We are definitely talking about the same Civil War veteran, David V. Rhea.
David's parents were Robert M. Rhea and Nancy Evans. My family had traced
our roots back to Robert M. Rhea, a farmer and sheriff in Paris, Edgar Co.,
Illinois. A Robert M. Rhea was also listed as a soldier in the 1831-2
Black Hawk Indian War (almost non-war) in Illinois.
I also had a hard time trying to connect Robert M. Rhea to the Sullivan Co.
TN Rheas even though the 1850 census says he was born there in about 1807.
Researcher and author Ed Foley found this critical link. I am very
grateful to Ed Foley.
"The Massingill, Massingales and Variants" book written by Samuel Evans
Massengill, M.D. in 1931 contains the following.
"Nancy Evans m. Robert M. Rhea, a son of James Rhea, and a grandson of Rev.
Joseph Rhea, and moved to Paris, Edgar County, Illinois. They embarked
west on a flat boat via the Holston River and their first child was born
enroute. Children: Frances, William, David, Agie (Clinger). Perhaps other
children, but names unknown."
Since Robert M. Rhea's father, James, was 40 years-old in 1815 when he
married Betsy Snapp he must have had an earlier wife, name unknown, from
whom Robert M. was born (in about 1807.) Robert M. Rhea was not
mentioned in James Rhea's last will, but Robert had, of course, moved away
to Illinois long before James's 1855 death.
