William L. Rhea, a descendant of Rev. Joseph Rhea, wrote a GENEALOGY of
THE RHEA FAMILY, the first edition in 1893-94, the second, in 1895.
Each one was hand-written and nearly 400 pages in length. Another
descendant, Anne Rhea Bachman Hyde, stated that "If Cousin Will Rhea (of
Knoxville) wrote this, it is correct, but errors, in general, in her
genealogy [Zella Armstrong, Notable Southern Families, Vol. II], are as
the sands of the Sea. Anything that Cousin Will Rhea wrote was as the
Begats in the Bible."
In the earlier edition, he listed Elizabeth as the sixth child, and as
the fourth in the latter one (followed there by the word "died").
He gave James' birth date as Jan. 18, 1775, and his death on March 23,
1855.
As to church membership, William stated that James' wife, Elizabeth, was
a member of the Presbyterian Church at Blountville, [Tenn.], and that
both were buried there. "S. R" wrote in James' obituary "...that
although he did not profess the religion of Christ (which was lamented
by his many friends) yet few men were more moral."
James left a diary that names his children. It can be found in the
Tennessee Library and Archives, Nashville, Microfilm Roll #792.
