#115- John William Rhea's Family Bible.* In the author's possession. Also,
PREBLE CO, OH RECORDS OF DEATHS, PROBATE COURT, 1867-1907, 84.* Their
marriage license is recorded in the PREBLE CO., OH MARRIAGE BK.1, 175.* John
William Rhea is buried in the Gard (also known as Winholt) Cemetery in Dixon
township, Preble County. See Brubaker, Joan Bake, ABSTRACTS FROM THE EATON
DEMOCRAT, 1877-1881, (1980). 54. There is no visible grave marker. He was the
great-great grandson of William Reah/Reagh/Rhea of Augusta and Bath Counties,
Virginia, and the great grandfather of the author, Robert Perry Rhea. John
William and Nancy Rhea were the parents of: Levi Rhea, July 27, 1849 -
December 11, 1877; Harmonious Rhea, January 28, 1851 - February 24, 1873;
Mary Ann Rhea, March 8, 1853 - November 30, 1885; Climelaia, October 18, 1857
- November 28, 1875; William Harvey Rhea, September 20, 1859 - March 9, 1877;
Alfred Perry Rhea (author's grandfather), September 19, 1863 - April 8, 1940;
Clara Bell Rhea, July 19, 1871 - March 29, 1873.
#116- Levi Gard's Funeral Invitation, found in John William Rhea's Family
Bible, (Ref. 115).* He died October 12, 1881, age 78 years, 1 month and 15
days. His obituary gave his birth as August 27, 1803, near Uniontown,
Pennsylvania, and 1812 as the year he came to Preble Co., Ohio (Gilbert,
Audrey, OBITUARY ABSTRACTS FROM PREBLE COUNTY NEWSPAPERS, 1850-1890). He was
buried in Mound Hill Cemetery, Eaton, Ohio.
Levi was the son of Simeon and Anna Gard, and the grandson of Jeremiah
and Experience Gard of Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The Preble County
Probate Case No. 4871* contains a copy of his will, dated March 10, 1881, and
a separate list of his heirs. His widow, Rebecca (Cooper/Ford/Grouse/Gard),
and children by his first wife, Mary: Nancy Rhea, Mary Ann Wilkinson, Simeon
Gard, Francis M. Gard, Margaret Gard, Elizabeth Gard and Jefferson Gard. Mary
S., his wife, was the daughter of Levi and Rachel Jones who came to Ohio from
North Carolina. her stone in the Winholt (Gard) Cemetery in Dixon Township,
Preble County, is inscribed " Mary S. Gard, Wife of Levi, 1805-1864." beside
her are the graves of two grandchildren. Clara Bell and Harmonious Rhea,
children of John William and Nancy (Gard) Rhea (Ref. 115). Levi Jones
mentioned his daughter "Poly S. Gard wife of Levi Gard" in his will dated
November 21, 1845. He had died by March, 1849, and his wife, Rachel, by
January, 1860. See Preble County, Ohio Probate Court Case No. 1351.*

D.C., for Harmonious Rhea. Commissary Sergt., 101 Reg't, Indiana Inf. Vol's.*
He was the brother of John William Rhea (Ref.114). He and his wife moved to
Los Angeles, California. Names of children, if any, not included.
#118- Harmonious Rhea and Elizabeth Zimmerman Button, Certified marriage
certificate, Preble County, Ohio.* Found in his pension papers (Ref. 117).
Recorded in PREBLE CO., OH MARRIAGE BK. 1, 301.*
#119- PREBLE CO., OH MARRIAGE BK. 1, 212.* License dated September 26,
married on September 27. Upon Robert Rhea, Jr's death in 1835, his widow,
Catharine, was appointed guardian to their children. See Preble Co., OH
Probate Court Case No. 641.* Among the papers is one indicating that
Elizabeth had died by 1853, and left an heir. Clayton Button.
