#91- Barren Co., KY Marriage Records, File Box 2.
#92- Barren Co., KY Order Book 4,19.*
#93- Barren Co., KY Marriage Records, File Box 4. Marriage of John Rhea to
Margaret Harrison. Believed to be the son of James and Elizabeth (Meek) Rhea.
John Rhea, son of William (Jr.), lived in Green County, never married, and
died about 1812 (see Ref. 143).
#94- Augusta Co., VA Deed Book 27, 58-59. * Dated December 21, 1790, recorded
the same day. William, Jr., the 300 acres from his father in 1775 (Ref. 65).
It is unlikely that William remained there for any length of time. In a
lawsuit his daughter Agness (Rhea) Wells, brought against him, he stated that
he had lived on Moffett's Creek in Rockbridge County on the property of his
father-in-law, Robert Gay (see Ref. 101).
In August, 1936, the Works Progress Administration of Virginia
Historical Inventory published a photograph and an architectural description
of William Rhea, Jr.'s Mill Creek property, known as the Van Lear Home.*
William Rhea was named as the original owner. the two story home had four
stone chimneys. When the author saw it in October, 1989, the one story
section had been removed. This may have been the birthplace of William's son,
Robert, who was born the year following its purchase.
#95- Rockbridge Co., VA Will Book 1, 24-29.* One does not expect to find a
tax list in a will book. See also Morton's A History of Rockbridge County,
Virginia, 365-369.* He wrote that there were two Archibald Reaghs, but the
author finds only one in a copy of the original list.
#96- Rockbridge Co., VA Order Book 1, 1778-1784, 234.
#97- Rockbridge Co., VA Deed Book C, 277-278.* Dated September 1, 1795,
recorded June 7, 1796. William and Elizabeth Rhea sold 250 acres on Walkers
Creek to David Bottorf for 260 pounds. William had purchased the property two
months earlier from John and Jean Fulton for 125 pounds. (Rockbridge Co., VA
Deed Book C, 184-185, * dated July 7, 1795, recorded same day). For reasons
other than a quick profit, one wonders why he purchased and sold the property
just before moving to Kentucky (Ref. 98).
