50. Bath Co.,VA Will Book2,20-21.* Will of John McCauslandSr. Dated
January 9, 1811, proved in September and October Courts, 1813. The name was
spelled McCausland, not McClausland. He mentioned only three sons of his
daughter, Jane Rhea-John, Robert, and Andrew. But in the will of their
father, Archibald Rhea [Ref.203], two other sons were named, Archibald and
William. They were either children of a previous marriage, which is likely,
or the grandfather arbitrarily excluded them from his will.

51. Bath Co., VA Will Book 2, 35.* Appraisement of the estate of John
McCausland Sr.

52. Kirkpatrick, Dorthie & Edwin C., Rockbridge County Marriages,
1778-1850,(Athens, GA:Iberian Pub.Co.,19--),388.*

53. Rhea, John, Ensign, Revolutionary War, Joseph Crockett's Co. 7th VA
Regiment, Col. Alexander McClenachan, National Archibes, Washington, D.C.*
In the Draper Manuscripts,30S78,* Draper wrote that"Joseph [Crockett] must
have been a Colonel in the war, and not much in service, a clever man, lived
in what is now Wythe County- at 'the cove' some 8 or 10 miles N.W. of Wythe
Ct.H." As suggested in the text, if Joseph Crocket was from Montgomery
County, later Wythe, then the John Rhea who served in the 7th VA Regiment wa
more than likely the son of Robert, and not the son of Archibald Sr. and
Margaret Campbell of Augusta County, as reported in Virginia Soldiers of
1776, [Ref.54].

54. Burgess, Louis A., Virginia Soldiers of 1776, (Richmond VA: Richmond
Press, 1927; Reprinted Spartanburg, SC: The Reprint Co., 1973), 1:162.* The
reference contains accurate military records from the National Archives, but
the author questions the validity of the date and place of birth, his
parentage, and his marriage to Mary Deloach. The brief biographical sketch
was contributed by Mary L. Norton (p.159) who also wrote the Rhea article
for The Highlander, best described as replete with information that has not
been verified by subsequent research (see The Highlander, Clan Campbell
Association of American, 1930,13-14,30*).

55. Chalkley, Vols.. 1-3, Indexes under Archibald Reah/Reagh/etc.* Also,
Rockbridge Co., VA Order Books 1778-1784, 1784-1787, 1787-1794, 1795-1799,
1799-1802.* In May, 1769, the church wardens "bound out" to Archibald Reaugh
an orphan, John Lynn. He was to serve his master until twenty-one in return
for his keep and education, which included reading, writing, to "sypher as
far as the Rule of Three, and further cause him to be taught the art and
mystery of coopering..." (Augusta Co., VA Vestry Book, 474*). This
Archibald, be he Senior or Junior, was a cooper by trade. In the years
between 1753 and about 1770, it is difficult ascertaining whether a
reference to Archibald Reah/Reaugh/etc. is to a single Archibald or to a
father or his son (see Ref.3). The designation "Senior" has not been found
in court documents, nor has "Junior" except in the deed of 1758 [Ref.5] and
in the mortgage deed of 1783 [Ref.3]. William's son, Archibald, named
himself "Junior" in his will, considering himself junior to his "Uncle
Archibald Reah" whom he named as executor [Ref.66].

56. Morton, Oren F., A History of Rockbridge County, (Staunton, VA: The
McClure Co., 1920), 459-460.* See also, Rockbridge County, Virginia
Lexington Gazette, Bi-centennial Issue, 1938, Sec. 1, p.5.* The name was
spelled "Reagh." One wonders why Archibald's name was not in the list. He
purchased his 200 acres from Borden the same year, 1753.

57. Augusta Co., VA Parish Vestry Book, 608.* In return for his service,
"the said Wm Reagh shall cause him to be taught to read and write &
arithmetick as fr as the Rule of Three and to learn him the trade of a
farmer and also to furnish and provide sufficient meat, drink, (?) lodging
and apparrel fitting an apprentice... and shall give him the freedom dues
that the law direct(s)..."
