Here are some notes on my article in the Bicentennial History of Bath
County, Virginia, 1791 - 1991, that is being transcribed by Pat:

She is placing the reference numbers in brackets. In the original
article, they are superscripts, but in the "plain text" format that is
required for RHEA-L, superscripts can not be used.

Also concerning references, you have noticed by now that some are not in
numerical sequence. When the article was submitted for publication, the
editors notified me that due to space limitations they could not be
printed, but they would retain the superscripts so I could publish them
separately. This was fortuitous, for in the time between submitting
the article and receiving the proofs, I was able to add new material and
comments. The original article covered six pages, three columns each,
and the References & Notes, nineteen pages, three columns each. Pat has
quite a task on her hands transcribing all of that!

Here is a very important suggestion about the References & Notes: I
would advise readers to read the references, for many go far beyond
what is stated in the main text. For instance, when I wrote the article
I only knew that Isabella Rhea was a daughter of Robert and Sarah
(Bingham) Rhea. In Ref. #197, I added a half column of additional
information. And Ref. #62 has four columns devoted to the John Rhea
vs.William Rhea Heirs court case.

The original article was published in 1991, and the References & Notes
in 1992. A number of items that were labeled as "uncertain" have since
moved to certain. For instance, I wrote that William, Archibald, and
Robert were "probably brothers." I now have no doubt about their being
brothers.

A final thought: It might be advisable to copy and paste the articles
in a Word document to keep them together.

There are six shorter articles on the Rheas in the same publication, one
entitled "John and Thomas Turk Rhea" by Connie Metheny, a descendant,
and until recently associated with the Bath County Historical Society.
She was on the Book Steering Committee. Connie asked me to write the
article in October, 1989.

I greatly appreciate Pat's volunteering to transcribe the two articles.

Sincerely,

Robert Perry Rhea
