Sorry, I did not get back with you all until now on the subject of our
particular Rhea family.
The Reagh that is our ancestor was Matthew Campbell Reagh m to Janet Baxter
in Londonderry County Donegal, IR. in 1687.and has been researched. The
Reagh name has had many changes until 1800, when it was accepted as Rhea, in
VA. No we are not original Rhea's, or lets say it has not been proven that
our name was originally Rhea and changed to Reagh.
There were Rhea in New Jersey long before we got here.
*********
Robert Perry Rhea wrote several pages in The Bicentennial History of Bath
County, Virginia. 1791-1991 Bath County Historical Society. Published by
Heritage House Publishing Marceline, Mo.
His part is entitled "The Rhea, Reah, Reagh, Reaugh, Reaoh, Reach Family"
pages 324-329.
This the family that the Rhea list was originally about. Our Rhea Family
Association was very fortunate to receive among others, these pages above
and References and Notes, which contains the documentation of our family in
Augusta Co. and Bath Co. VA.
We believe that Archibald Reagh( and other spellings) was the son of Matthew
Campbell Reagh, ( who before Ireland was the cousin of the 9th Earl of
Argyll.) He was imprisoned in England and escaped to Ireland.
Many thought he was imprisoned on the Isle of Mann, but after some research
I have been assured that the Isle of Mann was not allied with England, and
did not receive prisoners in that 1686 insurrection. Many of those
imprisoned in England were held in the Tolbooth of Leith. (a prison)
Unfortunately we have not been able to prove that Matthew Campbell Reagh was
actually Matthew Campbell. So we concentrate on filling in all the spots of
our descendants.
I am very familiar with the Martin Luther Coyner and Elizabeth Rhea family,
as my cousin's husband is directly from that family, and they are also part
of ours. Thomas Turk was the witness at that marriage. I have a copy of the
marriage record.
If I can get the permisson of Robert Perry Rhea, I will be happy to send, in
installments the above pages to the list.
What say Robert?
By the way RAY is originally English, but when people emmigrated to the
colonies, they were at the mercy of the person who was taking down the info.
So some who were Rhea became Ray, some who were Reagh became all of the
above. Some who were Rhea and Reagh became Rea, because that was the way the
person heard it. ,and some ended up with Wray., and then there is Rae...
Some people think they have trouble with the spelling of their names! They
have no idea. LOL
