Dear List,
Earlier today (April 11, 2001), in his message entitled "The family of John
S. Rhea of the 'Lawsuit,'" Ed Foley named John Rhea, the son of William and
Elizabeth (Clark) Rhea, as "John S. Rhea." In my file on John Rhea, I have
copies of primary documents including six deeds, the marriage bond for his
daughter, Elizabeth, to Toliver Wright, the now famous John Rhea vs. Wm.
Rhea Heirs lawsuit (Augusta Co., VA, Chancery Court, Case #45, 1803-05), the
will of Henry Dill, the father of John's second wife, Magdalene, a number
of other documents, plus numerous references to him by others. In not a
single instance does he sign his name or is he referred to as John S. Rhea.
In reviewing my e-mail messages for the past three years, I have found other
references to a John S. Rhea. On July 11, 1998, Frances Walker sent me a
message stating that "It has been most frustrating to me to have the name of
a grandfather and his birth date and death date and not be able to locate
him. He was John S. Rhea, born 23 Feb., 1776. He died in Lincoln Co., TN 5
Feb. 1839. I understand that his wife was Sarah." .
In a message from Ed Foley to RHEA-L on July 18, 1998, he forwarded an
e-mail from Becky Rhea, who wrote: "Thank you for getting back to me so
fast. It looks like your book may be the early information I need. My
connection
to the Rheas is: I am married to Ted Rhea, son of Don Earl Rhea, son of
Earl
Rhea (b. 2-9-1900) , son of Walker Rhea (b. 10-30-1871), son of William
Rhea (b. 1825), son of Pleasant V. Rhea (b.1803), son of John S. Rhea
(b. 2-23-1776). Does any of this look familiar? Please let me know if your
book addresses this line. If there is any info I can share, I would be glad
to.
Thanks for your help."
In a communication to me dated April 20, 1998, Ed Foley stated that
Archibald
[the son of Archibald & brother to William and Robert] Rhea's second wife,
Jean
McCausland, had a son named John S. Rhea who was also born 23 Feb. 1776. I
have a copy of John McCausland's will (1811, proved 1813) wherein he named
grandsons John, Robert. and Andrew; and of Archibald's will (1804) wherein
he
named all of his children including John. In family group sheets from Mrs.
Ross B.
Johnson of Lakewood, Colorado, she has John Rhea (not John S.), son of
Archibald & Jean (McCausland) Rhea, born Feb. 23, 1776, and married to Sarah
Scales who died in Lincoln Co., Tennessee in 1847. No reference given.
Frances
Walker (above) said she understood his wife was Sarah.
Another John S. Rhea was reported by Polly Dixon to RHEA-L On July 12,
1998. His siblings were born in the 1860's. The birth date was not given.
The
parents were Riley B. and Susan W. (Humphreys) Rhea.
In conclusion, there obviously was a John S. Rhea, and possibly two: one
presumably born Feb. 23, 1776, another (Polly Dixon's), about 1862. I am
confident that Wm. & Elizabeth's Rhea's son, John, was not John S. The
birth date
of Feb. 23, 1776 intrigues me, being repeated several times. Does anyone
know of
its origin? Documentation? And just who was this John S. Rhea?
Sincerely,
Robert Perry Rhea
And in a communication to me dated April 20, 1998, Ed Foley stated that
Archibald [the son of William and Elizabeth (Clark) Rhea] Rhea's second
wife, Jean McCausland, had a son named John S. Rhea, born 23 Feb. 1776.
Polly Dixon, writing to RHEA-L on July 12, 1998, names a John S. Rhea, the
son of Riley B. and Susan (Humphreys) Rhea. She mentioned no birth date,
but it must have been around 1862. there ids obviously no direct connection
to the John S. Rhea(s) born in 1776.
