Rea was the shortened verison of McCrea, the Rhea/Rea ancestor who left
Scotland in questionable and life threatening circumstance. He first went to
Ireland and then to the US. There are a lot of Rea's in western NC. around
Swannanoa that I suspect are direct desendants. The other in Pa went thru
and osmosis of name change and Rhea emerged for those in Pa, and later in
the South. The American revolution appeared to at least be part of the
catylist for the move, change etc. When I visited the Rheas in Sneedville in
Hancock County - Melungeon Country two summers ago, Judge Rhea showed me a
picture of his father and I saw strong family resemblance. He remarked upon
meeting me that I looked like his father. In our conversation he spoke of
River Rheas' and Hill Rheas. Judge Rhea line appears to be the River Rheas,
but without doubt there is some mixing. How these Rheas got to Hancock
county is a study in itself, and I feel the key to Febras Kids and my John
L. Rhea.
Afer all this rambling let me say there is likey a stron connection to the
Rea's over East of Ashville around Swannanoa, NC Has any one done a study of
the migration and possible osmosis of the Rea/Rhea name as they moved over
the mountians to Hawkins and Hancock County/
