Subject: [RHEA-L] Resending "John Rhea" in text format (with apologies and hopes that it reads better)

First, I want to say how much I respect the expertise and effort that is
represented by this group. I have started to browse the archives of the
last several years or so, and it is very impressive. The "spirit" of the
the group is very pleasant also.

If I may, I would like to briefly introduce myself. My name is James Rhea
McCoy, and though I now live in Eugene, Oregon, I was born in Knoxville,
Tennessee. My interest in geneology is recent, but I tend to be obsessive
and compulsive, so I should fit right in. :-) I apologize in advance if I
am ignorant of the group history and common knowledge ... the archives are
pretty extensive and it will take some time to acquaint myself with them.

My particular interest is best introduced by quoting an October 1, 1997
posting by Pat Hall (do I have the name correctly?). It reads:

New Rhea names for you to research:

FYI Greene Co. Tennessee

RHEA, Charles 209 00001 - 00001
RHEA, Ezekiel 225 030001 - 20001101
RHEA, John 227 0010201 - 230001
RHEA, Robert 227 11021 - 21011
RHEA, Samuel 204 01000001 - 00113001
RHEA, Sarah 197 0002 - 1100001

My interest is with the John Rhea and the Robert Rhea on page 227, which I
*think* is the enumeration of what my family called the "Rhea Farm." (More
on that later).

Turning to page 227, here's what we find. (I am using the Greene County,
Tennessee 1830 Federal Census indexed from the TnGenWeb Greene County page.)

RHEA, John 227 0010201 - 230001
RHEA, Robert 227 11021 - 21011
BALCH, Ann 227 0 - 000110001

Here's some information that I have from some family letters that were
written in 1927 or so about my 3rd great grandfather, John Rhea, who moved
to Greenville from Virginia sometime in the late 1700's or early 1800's.
Some of the marriage dates are from the LDS Center here in Eugene; some of
the birthdates are calculated from the 1850 Greene County census.

John Rhea
b. ? Virginia
d. January 5, 1843 Greenville
m. 16-April, 1816 Green Co.
Wife: Mary E. Dennis (known in the family as "Polly" Rhea); b. abt. 1805
(her age was identified as 45 in 1850 census)

Children:

1. William D. Rhea
b. 1817
m. October 16, 1849 (to Elizabeth Willoughby)

2. Elizabeth Jane Rhea
b. 1819-1820
m. April 14, 1842 (to Uriah Mathews)

3. Lorinda Rhea
b. 1821
m. November 16, 1841(to George Wykle)

4. Kesiah Rhea
b. 1824
m. December 31, 1844 (to Peter Rader)
d. January 3, 1903 (I am indebted to Kathi F., a descendent of Peter
Rader, for this information)

5. Martha Rhea
b. ?
m. ? (Joseph Milburn)

6. Mary Rhea
b. 1830
m. August 31, 1850 (to John Courtney)

7. John Rhea
b. February 25, 1831
m. February 17, 1853 (to Candace Fitzpatrick)
d. December 20, 1869

8. Francis Rhea
b. 1832

9. Greene Rhea
b. 1834

10. James R. Rhea
b. 1836
m. ? (to Ellen Fitzpatrick)

11. George Rhea
b. 1838

12 Sarah Rhea
b. 1842
m. May 15, 1860 (to William Davis)

Now, if we look at the John Rhea household in 1830, here's what we have (if
I understand the system correctly):

Male Female
Age Range

00 - under 5 0 2
(Martha?, Mary?)
05 - under 10 0 3
(Kesiah?, Elizabeth Jane? Lorinda?)
10 - under 15 1 0
(William Rhea?)
15 - under 20 0 0
20 - under 30 2 0 (?,
?)
30 - under 40 0 1
Polly Rhea
40 - under 50 1 0
John

Close, but not perfect. Polly Rhea indicated her age as 45 in the 1850
census, which would have made her 25 in 1830. And we have the two young men
between 20 - 29.

Well, it's getting late (which hopefully will serve as my excuse for any
errors above) and I have to take my eight-year old to an all day chess
tournament starting at 8:30 a.m. Best wishes to all.

[To be continued]
