I think that this Lewis Ray/Rhea is probably part of the Rev John
Ray/Rae/Rea family. I've been trying to figure out just where he fits.
It's also interesting that his second wife was a Cook. There were some
Cooks connected to the Rev John Rae/Rea family.
I'm thinking that he is the likely son of Aaron Rhea/Rae/Ray and his
wife, Nancy Howell, and a brother to Dicy Rhea who married William Gantt
Perkins.
Ute Perkins, father of William Gantt Perkins, also died in Hancock Co.,
IL. My ancestor, Lucy Rhea, was a sister of Aaron Rhea/Rea/Ray, and
married Levi Perkins who was also a son of Ute Perkins.
It's likely to be your Lewis Rhea who is mentioned in the Mormon
Endowments for the Dead records:
Film 170542, Endowments for the Dead - St.
George Temple, Pg 125. Louis Ray Apr 1793 Patrick Co., VA on 2 May
1877 by Andrew Houston Perkins, grandnephew
I have not been able to make an exact determination as to who Andrew
Houston Perkins is (there were more than one) but think he is the one who
is a grandson of Dicy Ray/Rhea, wife of William Gantt Perkins. Their
daughter, Martha Randall Perkins, married William J. Perkins, son of
Ephraim Perkins, and perhaps he is their son. This needs work as a
contributor's record says that Andrew Houston Perkins was the son of
William J. Perkins and Mary Jane Willis. William J. Perkins had at least
two wives as was allowed in those days for Mormons. This Andrew Houston
Perkins was born in 1859.
There was another Andrew Huston Perkins but he supposedly died in 1851.
He was the son of Reuben Perkins, another son of Ute Perkins.
It is said that Ute Perkins died in Hancock Co., IL., on the trail with
the Mormons to Utah. This is possibly correct but think more likely that
he may have been with the others but could go no further and stayed there
until he died. Abraham Lincoln was one of the witnesses to his will in
1843. Ute apparently owned some land in Block no. eight in Town of
Macedonia in the County of Hancock and State of Illinois.
The Cooks come into the line as follows:
My Levi Perkins, son of Ute Perkins, married Lucy Rhea, daughter of Rev
John Rae/Rhea/Rea/Ray. They had a son, Reuben Perkins, who married
Mariah Rhea, daughter of Sebird Smith Rhea and Nancy Cooke. Nancy Cooke
was the daughter of Robert Cooke and Susannah Watson. The town of
Cookeville, TN., was named after Nancy's brother, Richard Fielding Cooke.
I can't say how your Elizabeth might have fit into this scheme and
perhaps she did not at all.
Some of these families also went to Missouri, mostly Mercer Co.
