In the RAY-RHEA book by Joseph C. Rhea, Jr., 1969, Chapter III, Page 21,
reference is given to "The Other Joseph" who came to this country around
1790 and settled in Washington, Co., VA. When he arrived, his name was
"Ray," but he changed it to "Rhea" on the advice of a school teacher who
informed him that "in this part of the country we spell the name R-h-e-a."
The index lists sixteen descendants named Joseph. Besides the William who
was mentioned in Notable Southern Families, Robert Rhea, the brother of
Archibald and William Rhea of Augusta Co., VA, managed to make it his final
resting place in 1779 (Washington Co., VA, Will Book 1, 34). It looks like
he was the first with the name "Rhea" to arrive in Washington County. Seems
like Washington County had its share of Rheas!
